Post-Secondary Education

On a great campus, discovery doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in the everyday moments where people feel welcome to connect, ask questions, and explore.
— Pauline Thimm, Prairie Region Education Sector Leade

Our Higher Education practice partners with institutions across Canada to design campuses that accelerate discovery, foster belonging, and adapt to change. We create environments that support interdisciplinary collaboration, diverse learner needs, and ambitious institutional climate goals.

Designing for Discovery and Belonging

We organize buildings around vibrant “collision points” where teaching, research, and student life intersect. Flexible grids, movable partitions, and resilient infrastructure allow rooms to shift seamlessly from seminar to studio to hybrid mode. Wellness is embedded through daylight, acoustics, intuitive wayfinding, and inclusive facilities that affirm all identities. At the same time, we align with institutional climate goals by prioritizing electrification, high-performance envelopes, and adaptive reuse strategies that reduce both operational and embodied carbon.

INNOVATIVE CAMPUS STRATEGIES

ACTIVE & HYBRID LEARNING, WIRED INTO THE ROOM

Next-generation classrooms blend lecture, seminar, and online modalities. Lab modernizations standardize AV, power, and data so pedagogy—not infrastructure—drives the setup. Movable furniture and acoustic zoning keep transitions smooth.

RESEARCH-TEACHING INTEGRATION

Shared core facilities, write-up lounges, and transparent labs bring researchers and undergraduates into daily proximity, breaking down silos and boosting mentorship. Informal study zones along research spines normalize cross-disciplinary exchange.

DESIGNING FOR BELONGING & WELLNESS

Accessible paths, inclusive washrooms, multi-faith rooms, sensory-friendly study zones, and daylighted “third places” improve persistence and satisfaction. Biophilic finishes and advanced IAQ strategies further support wellbeing.

CARBON-SMART CAMPUSES

Electrification, heat recovery, and envelope upgrades reduce operational carbon, while adaptive reuse and timber systems address embodied carbon. Visible systems and real-time dashboards make performance legible to learners.

The result: campuses that inspire discovery, foster connection, and equip institutions for the future.
